With the innovative CRISPR technique,a completely new material can be produced, namely hybrid nano-biocellulose. This method used in medicine consists in genetic recombination - removing one DNA fragment and replacing it with another, as a result of which, it is possible to treat a disease or obtain new drugs.
The scientists who developed this technique were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. The CRISPR method made it possible to modify the genome of biocellulose-producing bacteria, which in turn resultedin the creation of a hybrid nano biocellulose combining the features of biocellulose and spider silk proteins. What does it give us?
An innovative mask structure was created, forming a special flexible 3D membrane made of very thin fibres (20 nm) 3,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.
